CNY 2012 Tanjung Balai

It has been more than 10 years since my last visit to Tanjung Balai. Tanjung Balai is one of Indonesia's island. Most of you may not have heard of that place, and for people who does, no offence, but it is known for a prostitution/mistress hot spot for many Singaporean men.

My 大嫂 is a Chinese Indonesian who lived there. Like most Indonesian Chinese in Tanjung Balai, they run their own business. They own a provision shop as well as a 'hotel'. For CNY this year, our family decided to pay our in-laws a visit since we were not celebrating CNY.

Golden Hotel

In Tanjung Balai, you will not find any Swissotel or Pan Pacific. Their hotel standard is probably the 2* or 3* of Singapore hotel standard. One room per night costs around $30 - $40. Amenities are basic; CRT TV, heater, air con.

On a sunny afternoon, the in-laws planned a trip to the beach for a BBQ.

I felt that I was in Kampong days when is saw this. Yes, this is a BBQ pit. They dug a hole in the sand, dumped charcoal in, and placed bricks beside it.

Then, wire mesh on top, followed by Otah and Chicken Wings. Oh, and their only had otah, chicken wings, otah, otah and chicken wings.

When I was walking along the streets, I have passed by several of these stalls. I wondered why this stall only sells vegetable oil. On the next day, I saw a man was pouring a bottle of these 'vegetable oil' through a funnel into his motorcycle's petrol tank. Yes again, this is a petrol kiosk.

On the third day of CNY, the hypermarket finally opened. It was the second air-conditioned place which I have been to apart from the hotel. We decided to pop by for some shopping as there were no other options available. The supermarket has three levels; level one would be the groceries, level 2 would be apparel, and level 3 was the home section.

forgot if it tasted the same, but it is good.

After savouring the 干捞面, we bid farewell to our in-laws and headed off to the jetty.
